For Immediate Release: June 28, 2022
(Hobart, Okla.) – The Oklahoma Travel Industry Association (OTIA) recently held its annual RedBud Awards at the Oklahoma History Center. The awards are open to all Oklahoma tourism entities and represent the highest honor given in the Oklahoma tourism industry. The General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum earned an award of merit in the outstanding temporary exhibit category for the “9/11 Never Forget: 20th Year Memorial” traveling exhibit.
RedBud Awards were presented to 37 entities in 17 categories recognizing top tourism attractions, events, programs and organizations for outstanding efforts to serve and promote Oklahoma’s tourism industry. Entries must have been produced, published broadcast or held between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022 and were evaluated by a slate of tourism professionals on specific criteria including customer service and experience, marketing effectiveness, media relations, variety of audiences reached, value and overall creativity.
"We are honored to receive this outstanding award in a highly competitive field of submissions from our peers,” said D’Lese Travis, executive director of the General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum. “We felt compelled to create the 20-year memorial exhibit to ensure we continue to remember and learn about the implications of the events from that day. We are proud to honor those lost and those impacted and we are humbled to be recognized for those efforts.”
The “9/11 Never Forget: 20th Year Memorial” was a mobile, outdoor exhibit that travelled around the state making stops September 1-11 at 12 locations. It included an interactive display for visitors to listen to sentiments from world-renowned leaders and artifacts such as a piece of a steel beam from the Twin Towers, debris from the Pentagon crash site, a New York City fireman’s uniform and help and more. The exhibit included lighting depicting the Twin Towers that remained lit until midnight at each stop. Members of the public also had the opportunity to sign a commemorative banner in honor of those lost.
The General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, please visit TommyFranksMuseum.org.
